Self-Determination & Self-Advocacy
Hi, my name is Ellis. Come on in and let’s talk about self-advocacy. Let me jump right in and say that people with disabilities have the right to make their own choices, and information is the tool that helps you make the right ones for you. Self-determination means deciding who you want to be and what you want to do after high school.
To create the life you want, it’s important to speak up and ask for what you need. For example, tell your teachers if you want help with schoolwork or ask your parents if you want to try a new social or recreational activity. This is called self-advocacy, and it builds confidence and independence, helping you succeed in school, work, and life.
