Document Your Disability

Having an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or a 504 plan is crucial for ensuring you get the right help at school. These documents outline the specific services and support you need to succeed, like extra time on tests or special learning tools.

Be sure to talk to your parents or other support people to find out what you might already have in place.

Evaluation

The evaluation process is like a check-up for school. Teachers and specialists look at how you learn. They might ask you questions, have you do some activities, or watch you in class. This helps them understand your strengths and challenges and determine if you need special help to get the most out of your education.

You’ll need to contact your school to be evaluated.

IEP

IEP, or “Individualized Education Program,” is a detailed plan for how schools can provide the right tools and environment for their students, unique to their needs and disabilities. This includes specially designed instruction as well as other supports and services.

You’ll need to contact your school to develop an IEP.

504 Plan

A 504 Plan formally explains how the school will remove barriers preventing a student from remaining in general education courses, regardless of their disabilities.

As it’s primarily their responsibility to put it into action, you’ll need to contact your school to develop a 504 plan.
