Your TRIP doesn’t end here. After you turn 14 there is a whole other map to explore. Be sure to come back!

What to expect in high school

High school is different from earlier grades. Many students move to different classrooms for each subject, and each teacher will be different too, but others might do better in a self-contained classroom. Some classes everyone has to take, and others you get to pick based on what you like or what you want to do in the future.

You’ll also have more to keep track of. You need to remember your schedule, get to class on time, and stay organized, but don’t worry, there are people to help. Your teachers, case manager, and counselors are there if you need them.

Take a look around the classroom with me, there’s lots of great information on the walls.

Study Skills & Tools

There are so many things that can help you in a classroom. E-readers, calculators, laptops & tablets, voice recorders to help with note taking, even listening to music while studying can be a study skill. Ask your case manager about different learning styles and tools to find the way your brain learns best!

Social and Life Skills

High school has many requirements. You’ll need to take math, history, language, but going to school can also be about learning to navigate the world just a little like you navigated on this TRIP! In life you’ll need to meet people, fill out forms, do taxes, and all sorts of things. You can ask your teachers, your case manager, and even your peers what they think about things, and share your own thoughts too.

Remember to talk to an adult you trust about everything you learn.

Clubs Teams & Activities

You’ll have a lot of new opportunities in high school. Joining clubs or teams at your school can be a lot of fun when you find one that is right for you. It looks good to schools in the future and best of all, it helps you meet friends and move toward goals together.

It's Your Time!

How do you like to get to school each day? Do you get a ride or take the bus? Maybe you like to walk or ride a bike instead? However you like to get there, it’s important to make sure you get to class on time, not just in the morning, but for each class. Remember that in high school, there might be more than one classroom for your different subjects.

Make a Plan: 4 Years

These four years of school will help you learn a lot of things, but the ability to get the most out of it is not always as easy as it should be. That’s where Case Managers can help. Remember that you have options in high school too, and making a plan in your IEP allows you to feel more prepared and focus on learning.
